| biCHANCE, 2004. Participant Inc., New York. On January 9-11, 2003, PARTICIPANT INC presented biCHANCE, an installation and performance. Three large-scale rose mandalas, 30 feet by 60 feet were constructed on the floor of the gallery, by plucking twenty dozen roses apart petal by petal. Stathacos invited the audience to participate in this process, filling the gallery space. The mandalas existed completed for one day. During the final performance, the mandala was erased by the artist. The petals were swept off the gallery floor, making a rose waterfall and landing on the floor below. An audio piece by Stathacos, a reading of 1000+wishes (a compilation of anonymous wishes from The Wish Machine Project) accompanied the performance. All desires are fleeting and disappearing just like the petals. ![]() ![]() 1000+ Wishes and wishmachine.com 1000+ Wishes is a book of anonymous wishes that have been collected from around the world via www.wishmachine.com, fax, mail, written and spoken. All together these wishes link our common desires, pain, joy, and hopes in a poetic rant that accents humanitys similarities more than differences. Included are wishes by Tibetan refugee children in India. The childrens wishes provide the book with a call for peace and compassion that is universal. The wishes marked the passage of time into the next millennium as a global action within a public art project. This artist book is one of the first to be produced through responses on a web site. Over 50% of the wishes in the book came through the internet and the remainder were collected via mail, fax or spoken. |
